Welcome to the M13 Youth Project website! We hope you enjoy browsing through it and reading about our work together with young people. If you would like to comment on our work or this website, or find out more about what we do, please email us through the 'Contact Us' section. Introduction to the Project M13 Youth Project is a well-established, community-based project, specialising in detached youth work with young people often labelled ‘hard-to-reach', in the inner-urban areas of Brunswick, Longsight and Victoria Park in Manchester. Established in 1995, we work from an inclusive Christian value-base, using the principles and practices of informal education and community development.
Our aim is to work together with young people to foster learning and long-term positive change within young people and the communities in which they live.
This is what one young man, aged 17, says: “M13 has helped me a lot since I’ve been coming. When I started to come, I was mixing with a few people who sent me down the wrong path, which I was daft going that way. I was involved in a street robbery which I got arrested and sent to court for. I let my workers know and asked them for a reference, but before they gave me one, they went through with me how I affected the victim which made me see sense and they gave me the reference and it helped me in court a lot. Since the offence and they spoke to me, I have gained confidence in saying no to people when I know it is wrong or going to affect people. I now am off the streets and going Cadets, Territorial Army and M13.” (June 07) M13 workers have known this young man over 5 years. We first met him and his friends on the streets through detached work, we built a consistent relationship with him over the years, involved him and his friends in trips, activities and projects which we worked out together with them. Most importantly, we were available to him when he needed us and the trust we shared meant we were able to challenge him in a way he understood and responded to.
Not all the young people we work with respond to us as positively as he did; others are so inspired they set up their own community action projects, or volunteer with M13, to benefit other young people and their neighbours. Either way, we continue to work with young people consistently and openly, with respect and hope, regardless of their ability, faith, gender, sexuality, ethnicity or nationality.
The Project works in partnership with a wide range of local churches, schools and agencies within inner-city Manchester for young people’s benefit.
The M13 Youth Project is the working name of the charity, Urban Action Manchester, (Registered Charity Nº1069401), and is a local ministry of Youth for Christ.
