Staff And Local Communities

Go back

M13’s long-term view and commitment to the community are two aspects of our work which have enabled staff to develop wide-ranging relationships of considerable depth with many young people, a large number of whom continue to stay in touch many years later. Staff have substantial understanding of the complex issues involved in work in the M13 area, through a combination of living and working locally, professional training, a commitment to community development and a willingness to learn from young people.

Living locally as youth workers and community members enables staff to engage with young people and communities on a neighbourly, as well as ‘professional’ basis, enhancing our ability to work from a community development perspective. Along with a willingness to learn, this frequently opens doors to us that can be closed to others, and gives us access to much useful local knowledge. This helps us to stand alongside and work in active partnership with young people, local churches, community groups and statutory agencies, offering a complimentary approach to other agencies and enabling us to be available to young people out of regular sessions, for questions, support when they need it, or simply to drop off trip money!
